Rep. Chris Stewart Announces new Utah National Parks

On Wednesday, Representative Chris Stewart (R-Utah) introduced the Grand Staircase Escalante Enhancement Act (H.R. 4558) which would create a 6th National Park, the Escalante Canyons Park & Preserve.

Stewart Stated in a press release posted on Wednesday, “There is a reason I live in Utah. I love it here! I love to ski. I love to hike and rock climb. I love these lands. I want to preserve them, and I believe Utahans are better suited to manage our lands than bureaucrats back in Washington.”

The following changes would take place under the Grand Staircase Escalante Enhancement Act if passed:

  • Escalante Canyons National Park would be created, making it Utah’s 6th national park.
  • The “Hole in the Rock Road” would be transferred to Utah in recognition of it’s significance to the Mormon Pioneer trail.
  • Three new distinct and separate national monuments would be created; The Grand Staircase, Escalante & Kaiparowits monuments.
